shipmate, sailor, retired GSCS deserves a few moments of our time to
intervene with the Chief CHENG to help him through some heavy winds and
high seas. As announced to me by GSCM (SW) Joe Fiorillo (Ret.) on
the status of GSCS

Quote" Family, friends & shipmates,
I was hoping to avoid writing this email, but it's time.
I will be having surgery next Tuesday for cancer (Squamas Cell
Carcinoma) of the tongue (primary tumor is at the base) and neck
dissection for the matastic lump that first showed up. We initially
thought chemo + radiation would be the treatment but after all the
tests and discussions the decision is that it's to big and bad to hope
that non-surgical means will get it all. At this point I don't know
how much tongue will be removed or if the voice box is involved. Kind
of like a hot bearing casualty (my Navy bud's), until you open it up
you just don't know for sure, despite all the tests.
The surgery will be out of Bakersfield, at Kaiser's main
hospital in LA. 5 day minimum stay, and Linda will be there with me.
My family is in Ontario, 1 hour away. So if you don't hear anything
for a week or so please don't worry. As soon as I get home I'll update
everyone.
Remember, enjoy life - this is not a dress rehearsal!

your upcoming repair work. We will keep the lube oil
circulating, the turning gear engaged and No. 3 GTG online. We
will not go to shore power as we pray for and await your speedy
return.
