GS Web Site Theory

Plank Owner:  The definition of a Super Snipe Plank Owner is simple, "If you send me your GS bio for the Plank Owner page, then you are a plank owner on the Super Snipe Web Site".  Being a plank owner on a ship has nothing to do with it.  We want everyone to have a piece of our GS web site.

Commercialization:  I have tell you up front:  "Sponsors" would be nice, but I am not going to shove advertising in your face.  If there are some "Fat Cat" GS out there that own or are affiliated with a potential sponsor, then I am willing to talk.  If we can make the site selfsustaining from within then that will be great.  I have not had to resort to selling pencils on the street corner yet, I have a much better idea;  you'll see.

GS Gear & GS Jobs

Gas Turbine Technical

The single most important thing you can do to help the site is "tell a fellow GS" about us.

The Self Sustaining Speed forum is a great place to pass the word or just play Sailor.  Check out the GS Forum.  This Forum idea is good, but I am not convinced it is practical.  I hope you use it.  We'll see.

What do we really want this web site to be.  Help me think.  Send in your ideas and gripes.

While we don't want to make this a virtual techman, I will post short technical issues and perhaps link to another page within the site for the final answer.  OR, ask the Gas Turbine TECHNICAL EXPERTS out there to let us link to their web page....We'll see.

Send in your issues/gripes and we'll go from there. Just do it Columbus took a chance.

Gas Turbine People, Places, and Opportunities

Welcome to the 1st Super Snipe Service Bulletin.  Although we are trailing shaft right now, we will go to full power in a few short weeks.  The main purpose of this bulletin is to introduce www.supersnipes.com to as many GS as possible.  SO,  forward this to a fellow GS so they can join the Service Bulletin Emailing list.

Hello shipmates, I'm Dale "dj" Descant GSCM (SW) Retired.  I retired from active duty in June 86, but continue to work for our great Navy in Logistics at the Coastal Systems Station .   My time is split between LCAC in Panama City, Fl. and LHD Class in Pascagoula, Ms.  I am chomping at the bit to talk about LHD 8, but I'll hold off for now.  Super Snipe came to me when I became the GS detailer from 1978 to 1981.

www.supersnipes.com came to me as a brain fart a few months ago.  I think the mere mention of Gas Turbine propulsion on a "Big Deck" got me spun up and the flashback of "4 burning & 2 turning" fired me up to no end.  I'll leave it at that for now.  I will say this, however, touching base and Emailing with fellow GS over the past months has made supersnipe.com my #1 priority.....I was getting bored on the mid-watch so here we are.

Visit GSCM (SW) retired Joe Fiorillo's newsletters.  Joe has a great web site with plenty information.  Joe will soon be a feature writer for Super Snipes.---Won't you Joe????

We'll link to your web site.  Send it in, I'll add it to the GS Links Page.

General Comments And Issues

The "Honorary Plank Owner" board is in session.  Has been for some time on a couple of potentials.  I feel there is room for honorary plank owners provided they have paid their dues.  Tell me what you think.  I'm thinking former CHENG - MPA - early mentors that did not convert, but were part of our conversions/career.  Think about it...

Thank you for letting me ramble on.  Trust me when I say I will listen to and respect your comments and trouble calls.  What do you want to see?  I have not been an active GS for a long time.  It's time I get my groove back...  V/R, DJ Descant GSCM(SW), USN (Ret.) dj@supersnipes.com .

It is with deep regrets that I pass along to our community of active and retired Gas Turbine Technicians that Kenneth "Rusty" Cook, GSCS(SW) Retired, 5/5/1947 to 3/10/2011, passed away at 0230 on March 10, 2011. Rusty was a true sailor and technician and was an infinite resource of information and history when it came to the West Coast gas turbine community. Condolences maybe be sent to Jan Cook, Rusty's wife, at 555 Davidson St., Chula Vista, CA 91910. A military honors ceremony was held at 0900, April 10th, at the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma, California. Additional information can be obtained from Paul Brown at brown.paul@swrmc.navy.mil *** Article courtesy of GSCM Joe Fiorillo at http://users.erols.com/h2ocats/turbine.html .

Night Orders:

I "probably" will not restrict the Emailing list to only GS types .  Why is that, well, we should give the rest of the world a chance to be like us if they have the right stuff.  After all, Gas Turbines are used world wide and this may open up opportunities for former and future GS.
